Mervin’s search for different modes of expression in sound began through research and practice during his studies in music, graduating from the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music in Singapore.
His other works include creating bespoke music and sound design for film, media, installations, as well as collaborations with performing and visual artists. Mervin also actively explores his practice in other forms including light, visuals, and design.
Mervin’s artistic outputs include designing & performing a visual set alongside contemporary musician Garth Knox for The Arts House By Candlelight series, a curation of Seed performed alongside T’ang Quartet and Open Score Project at the ArtScience Museum, designing the production of Holier Then How by TheatreWorks, scoring the music for That Which Cannot Be Divided presented by Esplanade’s Huayi Festival 2019, SRT’s production of Guards at the Taj, co- directing Voyage Festival 2018 at the YST Conservatory, as well as arranging and producing a version of Majulah Singapura for Singapore F1 Grand Prix 2018.
Revelations and Angels is an audio-visual performative installation by Phoon Yu and Theemptybluesky Revelations & Angels is an audio-visual performative installation in two parts, presented by organist Phoon Yu and electronic musician Theemptybluesky, reframing the conventional recital into a new kind of experience. Revelations is a multimedia installation piece that will take over the expansive foyer and atrium areas of Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music. Designed by Theemptybluesky, the installation experiments with light, space, and sound to invite contemplations of cosmogony and our relation to the universe.

Theemptybluesky performs at Later, a performative lounge based on an eponymous, 18-minute narrative film directed by Sal Seah, weaving in the lives of five people. For two nights only, audiences are invited into a visual and sonic setup, each installation collaboratively presented by the actual cast & crew. The entire affair will display the intersections of art and reality, (de)contextualising the film while letting the viewer come to their own truth.
Ocean’s Delight is a multidisciplinary project centring on both visual and musical elements. The performance aims to frame thoughts into portraits, where the artists cast away their beings and let consciousness wash them ashore. The three artists perform various roles throughout in preparation and performance, bringing to light the beauty of the everyday in a multisensory experience.
